Asheville Middle School and Western North Carolina Alliance Cleanup Swannanoa River

Eighth graders at Asheville Middle School have been studying water and the French Broad Watershed all year. They have learned about water pollution, water flow, groundwater, and have even put on a 5-k race. For two days next week the students will put some of the information they learned to the test.

For this special group effort, students will spend two days cleaning up some of the dirtiest sections of the Swannanoa River in Asheville. Pulling bottles, shopping carts, and even old TVs from the river will help reduce one of the river’s most visible pollutants, trash.

There will also be time for the Western North Carolina staff to teach the students about many of the other threats to the river. Students will investigate areas of the river impacted by mud runoff, oil and gas, pesticides and fertilizers, and hopefully, they may even spot some fish.

WNCA is a 28-year-old grassroots organization that empowers citizens to be advocates for livable communities and the natural environment of Western North Carolina.
