Students Can Be Assistants at the Polls, Too!

North Carolina elections laws allow for many opportunities to increase voter awareness and civic participation among young citizens of our state. Our student program, for example, will help foster lifelong habits of democratic involvement in the election process and promote some of the goals recently mandated in the state social studies curriculum.

Students who meet guidelines established by G.S. 163-42.1 may serve as a student election assistant in the upcoming General Election on November 4th. These students will have the opportunity to truly see democracy in action and will be entrusted with the same obligations and responsibilities as adult election assistants. They will also receive the same training and compensation as their adult counterparts.

Eligibility for the program requires that students:

  • Be at least seventeen years of age at time of election
  • U. S. citizen
  • Enrolled in a secondary school or home school
  • Have an exemplary academic record
  • Be recommended by the principal or director of their school
  • Have parental permission
If you are interested, please complete the Student Assistant Application below and mail it to PO Box 7468, Asheville NC 28802. For additional information about the Student Assistant Program or about other volunteer opportunities at the Board of Elections office, please call 250-4205.
