RiverLink is a regional non-profit spearheading the economic and environmental revitalization of the French Broad River and its tributaries as a place to work, live and play. One of many projects going on to honor Earth Day, will be an art and poetry contest. Check out this years panel of Judges for the contest. Richmond Smith- Art Teacher/Painter Richmond SmithRichmond has been teaching private art classes out of his studio since August of 2006. He also teaches art classes to children at Rainbow Mountain's Children's School and adults with disabilities at Open Hearts Art Center. Prior to teaching privately, he taught in public school since 2003 at various grade levels, including the Literacy through the Arts Program from the Asheville Art Museum, and most recently at Westview Middle School in Goose Creek, SC. He holds a B.F.A in Studio Art (painting, sculpture) from Western Carolina University and an art education degree from University of North Carolina at Asheville. When he is not teaching art classes or teaching tennis lessons, he is busy creating his own visionary, textured oil and mixed-media paintings and sculpture. Angelique Tassistro-Ceramic Artist Angelique TassistroAngelique Tassistro makes work into play. Her belief in the magic of creativity, along with her childhood mispronunciation, turned imagination into "magic nation." Angelique is a ceramic artist who focuses on functional, whimsical pottery with a sculptural approach, always going to that "magic nation" for inspiration. Angelique grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and currently lives and works in Asheville, North Carolina. She received two BAs from Louisiana State University in 2000 in Ceramics and Photography. Her work is shown in the permanent collection at New Orleans Museum of Modern Art in New Orleans, Louisiana. Angelique is the founder of Dog Door Studio and, in 2010, is launching Fly Coop Studios: A Nesting Place, introducing a new line of clay work, photography and recycled furniture. Her studio is open to the public and is located in the Asheville's River Arts District at 375 Depot. Ellen Perry-Chair of English/Communications at AB Tech Ellen PerryEllen grew up in Weaverville, North Carolina, where she continues to live near her family and friends. Her academic interests include 17th and 18th century British life and literature, Restoration drama, and Southern and Appalachian culture. Ellen holds a B.A. in Literature and Language from UNCA and a M.A. in English from Appalachian State University. The recipient of the 2003-2004 Distinguished Teacher Award for part-time faculty at UNCA and a 2009 Golden Apple Award at A-B Tech, Ellen enjoys traveling (especially to Paris and any beach), reading, singing, dancing (Swing, Lindy Hop, Charleston, Latin), Zumba, speaking French, and photography. Fleta Monaghan-Artist/Art Teacher Fleta MonaghanFleta Monaghan is a full time painter, working almost daily in her studio next to the French Broad River. Monaghan graduated with honors from UNCA with a BFA in visual art, and has a Masters Degree from Western Carolina University in two year College Teaching, focusing in art. She is the founder, director, and lead teacher of River's Edge Studio, a visual arts learning center for adults. She teaches oil, acrylics and mixed media and hosts five other professional artists who teach their specialties at the studio. In addition, she is the art teacher for the French Broad River Academy, a private middle school for boys located next to her studios and gallery in the river arts district. In March 2009 she opened 310 ART Gallery, an exhibition space adjoining River's Edge Studio in the historic River Arts District of Asheville, NC where she and 15 other artists exhibit year round.
