When young Holly Breen won the gold medal in the Hickory Nut Gorge's inaugural Olympiad in 2005 for the 9-10 year old freestyle swim meet, her family couldn't have been more proud. For most people, what she had just accomplished wasn't earth-shattering. But for her and lots of children like her that weekend, it was big news. That's what happened last year, in a microcosm sort of way. Breen was just one entrant in one little race - one little activity in a spectacular Olympiad that saw hundreds of people young and old - from near and far - come out and know the pleasure of competing, or just the joy of seeing others in action. They came by the hundreds, turning Hickory Nut Gorge into a recreational bonanza of fun.
The Olympiad is back through Sunday The Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad features events throughout the Gorge. Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad is a four-day sports festival unlike any other in the Carolinas. Scheduled through Sunday, and styled after the world Olympic Games, this non-profit, charitable sports festival is packed into one fantastic long weekend with more than twenty-five land and water events for team and individual competition. New events include the Dragon Boat and Cheerleading Clinics along with special events, your choice of races to Chimney Rock – 5K run or 7K cycle and the return of the Best Dam 5-mile run. There is something for everyone so join us for the Opening Ceremonies including Food, an Ice Cream Social, and a fabulous Ski Show on Friday night and then all the kids and adult events all day Saturday. Check out the details and then register at Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad. Since 2005, the event has contributed more than $84,000 to community service groups. This financial success is due in large measure to the generous sponsorships by businesses and individuals. (Images provided by the Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad.)
