September is National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month and Asheville Fire and Rescue would like to assist local citizens in better preparing for emergencies by reminding them to get a kit, make a plan, be informed and get involved. Asheville Fire and Rescue will respond quickly after an emergency or disaster strikes, but planning ahead aid in lessening the impact on you and your family. Knowing what to do ahead of time is your best protection.

The first step is to construct a basic emergency supply kit. This kit should include:

  • Water – one gallon of water per person per day. We recommend at least a 3 day supply.
  • Food – 3 day supply of non perishable food. Don’t forget your pets and don’t forget a manual can opener.
  • Medical supplies – keep on hand medical supplies for yourself, children and elders.
  • Battery operated radio with extra batteries.
  • Flashlight
Next make a plan:
  • How will you contact your family members. Sometimes calling out of state is easier then calling across town.
  • Plan how you will get back together with your family. If it isn’t your home, have another location.
  • Discuss what to do with different types of emergencies: fire, flood, bad weather etc.
  • Involve your children by allowing them to help you develop the plan and in return they too will know what to do.
Also, be informed:
  • Know what types of emergencies are most likely to affect you and your family. Keep up with local media and weather conditions. Know who and where your resources are to assist you.
Lastly, get involved:
  • Prepare your community
  • Learn about Citizen Corps
  • Know your neighbors special skills (medical, technical)
  • Determine escape routes for your neighborhood
Asheville Fire and Rescue is just one of many helpful resources available to help you in being better prepared for emergencies. Please help support and spread the word that September is National Preparedness Month by taking action.
