The Asheville Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit has been aggressively targeting speeders in school zones since classes got back in session – yet many drivers are still not heeding the signs to slow down in school zones.
Officers have issued 85 citations this week in the Long Shoals Road area alone, where there are three schools and thousands of students, staff and faculty making their way to campus each day. School zones are clearly marked with special speed limits posted, often with the effective hours marked on the signs. Motorists must also stop for stopped school buses and obey school crossing guards. “Some drivers may think it’s an inconvenience to obey the law and slow down,” said Sgt. Stony Gonce, head of the Traffic Safety Unit, “but their few minutes of inconvenience will never outweigh the importance of enforcing the law and ensuring that children get to and from school safely.” (Images provided by the Asheville City Schools and Buncombe County Schools.)
