The number of BCS high school students taking Advanced Placement courses has steadily increased over the last three years. In 2006, there were 700 students enrolled in AP classes compared to the 2008 enrollment which has increased to 851 students. The actual number of courses taken by students has also increased by 248 since 2006.
Students are taking multiple AP courses that prepare them to be successful at selected colleges and universities. Many students enter college as second semester freshmen due to their successful completion of advanced placement courses in high school and the willingness of the universities to accept these classes as credit earned. AP course participation is also a financial incentive for parents of high school students. Cliff Dodson, Superintendent, commented, “We continue to be very pleased in not only the number of courses offered, but also the number of students who participate in these courses. We are of the opinion that if they prepare well in high school and are highly motivated they will be successful at the university level.” Increasing the number of students who participate in AP courses has been a priority in Buncombe County Schools for a number of years.
