thru September 21 - Oil Paintings by Luke Allsbrook - Opening Friday, May 23 and continuing through Sunday, September 21, 2008, the Arboretum will host a landscape painting exhibit by internationally known artist Luke Allsbrook in the Baker Exhibit Center. The exhibit is titled "Our Precious Land: Visions and Scenes of North Carolina" and presents oil paintings on canvas that reflect the beauty of farmland across the mountain region and other natural and created landscapes. thru August 9 - Guided Hikes at Bat Cave Preserve - Wednesdays and Saturdays only, 10:00 a.m. and 2 p.m. Hikes take about two hours. Reservations are required in advance to attend a hike. thru August 16 - “Unto These Hills…a retelling” - Mountainside Theatre (7:30 p.m. nightly except Sundays) Contact: Cherokee Historical Association Box Office (828) 497-2111 “Unto These Hills” debuted on July 1, 1950 and was in instant hit. The drama has shown at the open-air Mountainside Theatre each summer since then when Kermit Hunter, a non-Native, wrote the original version as a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A new version that debuted last year adopted a Cherokee perspective of the Eastern Band’s own history and included authentic costumes, traditional dance and music and – for the first time ever – a majority of Cherokee actors. Attendance rose last season and audiences gave the revised show a standing ovation after each performance. Over the decades, more than five million people have experienced this memorable outdoor drama.

thru July 27 - The Octette Bridge Club - Eight sisters playing bridge twice every month are the nucleus of The Octette Bridge Club by P.J. Barry, Hendersonville Little Theatre’s third production of the 2008 season. "The Octette Bridge Club" opens at Hendersonville Little Theatre’s barn on State Street, at Kanuga and Willow, Friday, July 11 and closes Sunday, July 27. Held each summer across the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina, Folkmoot features performances, parades and workshops by more than 350 performers from a dozen or so countries. thru August 19 - PLAY AND LEARN GROUP - Parents/caregivers and children ages 2-5 in Buncombe County who are not in regulated child care are invited to attend a series of six free play and learn group sessions at 10am on Tuesdays from July 15 to August 19 and at 10am and 11am on Wednesdays, from July 16 to August 20. Each session lasts about 45 minutes and will be held in the Family Resource Center at Asheville City Schools Preschool, 441 Haywood Road in West Asheville. The program is funded by Smart Start of Buncombe County and focuses on developing pre-literacy skills through rhythm, rhyme and repetition. Activities include songs, dance and movement, stories, games, music instruments, puppets, and crafts. July 26 - 4th Annual Barbeque Fundraiser - The Edneyville Community Center Association will hold it’s 4th Annual Barbeque fundraiser at The Bub Hyder Ranch. July 29 - Teen Safe Driver Program - Sgt. Staggs from the NC Highway Patrol will present a free program focused on issues that teen drivers face. Teenage drivers have the highest crash risk of any age group and traffic accidents are the leading cause of teen fatalities. The problem is worse among 16 year-olds because of limited driving experience and an immaturity that often results in risk-taking behind the wheel.
